E3 week is here! The annual ultimate video game expo is underway, where the biggest names in the gaming world set to make some game-changing announcements. Yesterday Xbox kicked things off in their briefing and set the bar pretty high—let’s be real, it’s going to be hard to top Keanu Reeves, but more on that later.
Xbox gave us a first look at Project Scarlett, the next generation Xbox set for a 2020 release, which they’ve heralded as “the most immersive console experience ever.” With a frame rate of up to 120 frames per second, 8K capability, seriously upgraded SSDs, and ray-tracing, the specs on Project Scarlett certainly point to a bright future for gaming.
Xbox also showcased 60 upcoming games that will be available on Xbox and PC, announced 34 new games coming to Xbox Game Pass—they also officially launched Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, a subscription bundle that combines Xbox Live Gold and Game Pass and grants players access to over 100 console and PC games. Among other game drops, we learned Gears 5 has a September 10 release date, MMORPG Phantasy Star Online 2 is finally coming to the West in Spring 2020, and the highly anticipated Tales of Arise is also dropping 2020.
Amidst all these announcements, Keanu Reeves himself took to the stage to let us know Cyberpunk 2077 is dropping April 16, 2020 (and that he’ll be in it!).
Xbox also announced that starting in October, players will be able to stream games from their Xbox One consoles and unveiled the all-new Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2. They also announced the acquisition of Double Fine Productions (and previewed Double Fine's Psychonauts 2), bringing their tally of in-house development studios under Xbox Game Studios to 15. Lots of exciting things coming to Xbox in the next year and we can’t wait!
